Sports Physicals Q & A

What is a sports physical?

A sports physical is a specialized physical examination that focuses on making sure that your child is healthy enough to participate in increased activity. Many schools or sports organizations require sports physicals before your child can enroll in their extracurricular program.

The Acclaim Pediatrics team completes any paperwork that your sports organization requires and answers any questions you have about how to keep your child safe while they play.

What happens during a sports physical?

When your child arrives for their sports physical, the Acclaim Pediatrics team collects their height, weight, and vital signs. They ask questions related to their general health and update their health history. If your child is on medications, they note the names of those medications and their dosages.

Your child also receives a comprehensive physical examination, which assesses their:

  • Coordination and reflexes
  • Bone and joint health
  • Breathing and circulation
  • Vision and hearing
  • Digestive health

The team looks for any indications that your child's health would be compromised by playing sports. If they were to find anything concerning, they discuss those findings with you at the time of your appointment.

Is there any testing during a sports physical?

The Acclaim Pediatrics team may recommend diagnostic testing during your child's physical to get a complete picture of their health. Testing may include:

  • Blood work
  • Urine test
  • Breathing test
  • Coordination test

If your child has asthma, juvenile diabetes, or other childhood illness, they may recommend limitations or supportive treatments that will allow them to play safely. These disorders don't necessarily mean they can't participate in sports.

What can I do to prepare for a sports physical?

In preparation for your child's sports physical, explain to your child what they can expect before their appointment. If they are anxious about any aspect of their physical, let the team know so that they can be attentive and extra reassuring.

Bring your child's current medications and the sports physical form from your sports organization, if you have one.

Whether your child is playing tee-ball for the first time or is a strong teenage athlete with big dreams, sports physicals are an essential part of keeping them safe and healthy while they play. The Acclaim Pediatrics team can help get them prepared and be at their best for their season.
