Sick Visits Q & A

What is a sick visit?

A sick visit is a time of focused pediatric care when your child isn't feeling well or is suffering from an illness. During a sick visit, the Acclaim Pediatrics team assesses, diagnoses, and treats your child's symptoms or injury.

During a sick visit, the team reviews your child's health history, completes a focused assessment, orders testing, and recommends treatments. They may also provide work or school excuses for you or your child when necessary.

Typically, the team schedules a sick visit on the same day you call, so your child starts feeling better quickly, and you can rest assured they are getting the best care possible.

Acclaim Pediatrics offers both onsite and telemedicine sick visits and provides a separate area for well and ill children, limiting contact between healthy and sick patients and their families. They also offer convenient after-hours care, for when you don't want to wait for an assessment or treatment.

When should I schedule a sick visit?

If your child has any concerning symptoms or signs of illness, you can schedule a sick visit. The most common reasons parents schedule sick visits include:

  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Ear pain or ear infection
  • Cough and congestion
  • Rashes or hives
  • Pink eye
  • Allergy symptoms
  • Abdominal pain
  • Urinary tract infections (UTI)

Other reasons for a sick visit may include sprains, strains, minor burns, or infectious wounds. If your child has a severe acute illness or requires emergency treatment, the team at Acclaim Pediatrics may recommend you take your little one to the emergency room.

What happens during a sick visit?

During a sick visit, the team focuses on assessing and treating your child's current illness or symptoms. If they need a well-child exam or a sports physical, it's best to schedule them for another time.

The Acclaim Pediatrics team initially collects updated information about their health, including:

  • Height and weight
  • Vital signs, including blood pressure and temperature
  • Current medications
  • Current symptoms

They may ask you questions about possible exposure to specific allergens or illnesses and may order diagnostic tests such as a flu swab, strep test, urine test, X-rays, or blood studies. The team creates a treatment plan and may recommend a follow-up appointment within one to two weeks of your sick visit.

If you need to schedule an onsite or telemedicine sick visit, call or book an appointment online with Acclaim Pediatrics today.
